Richard Alan YoudsAuthor and illustrator of The Bonaparte Plateau: An Access GuideRichard Youds is one of six outdoor-oriented brothers. He grew up on B.C.'s south coast where he spent a fair bit of time conquering the salal. He has hiked in many countries from Europe to the South Pacific. Nowhere else appeals to him in quite the same way as the Bonaparte Plateau in the south Interior of British Columbia, with its array of subalpine lakes and intriguing forest trails. Richard has been a teacher for twenty years, and he is a father of two up-and-coming hikers. He loves his Kamloops teaching "day job," yet has always felt the need to get far beyond walls, crowds, and traffic. When once asked to summarize his philosophy, Richard replied, "Maintain the use of your legs as long as possible." Some believed he was kidding, but this book suggests otherwise.
As the author has been heard to say, "There is very little that is more important than getting to know a chunk of this planet from ground level, caring about it and, at last, feeling integrated with it."
"The sensitive, knowledgeable approach to backpacking the wilderness in Youd's guide will both improve appreciation of the beauty of the plateau, and increase awareness of Nature's fragility." To this end, Richard hopes to be hiking along through the trees when he's in his seventies. Each of the walks described in The Bonaparte Plateau: An Access Guide is practice for that future.
